I’ll never be the same I’ll tell you for sure !! You really are my ecstasy, my real life fantasy, Not that I’m complaining, a more beautiful vision I've never seen, if you don’t want to sing, a lifelong impression to fulfill my dream......

The Germans? Ruthless but efficient. The Italians? Ruthless but inefficient. The Dutch? Flair and brains. The Spanish? Temperamental, can’t hack the pressure. The Greeks? Er, pass, give me another one. The English? Tough but sloppy. The Belgians? Who cares....

On the darkest night in the recent history of English football, the multimillionaires of the national team suffered their greatest humiliation as their European Championship qualifying campaign ended in failure and angry scenes at Wembley, surely bringing an ignominious end to Steve McClaren’s tenure as head coach.

As the final whistle condemned England to a 3-2 defeat at the hands of Croatia, meaning that they lost out to Russia for a place in next summer’s finals in Austria and Switzerland, McClaren was subjected to furious calls for his resignation by sections of the crowd.

McClaren, who was escorted down the tunnel by the Football Association’s head of security, was not expected to succumb to that pressure immediately, but the FA is expected to call an emergency board meeting, possibly in the next 24 hours, and to vote unanimously to terminate the former Middlesbrough manager’s contract, at a cost in the region of £2 million, before turning its attention to finding a replacement.

England needed only a point, against a team with little to play for, to secure their place at Euro 2008, but they made a calamitous start, going 2-0 down inside 14 minutes as Scott Carson endured a torrid competitive debut in goal.

It is the first time since the 1994 World Cup that England have failed to qualify for a leading tournament and, as happened to Graham Taylor on that occasion, the buck is likely to stop with the head coach.

The various absentees, including Rio Ferdinand, John Terry and Wayne Rooney, sat grim-faced in the directors’ box before trudging on to the pitch to join their beaten team-mates at the final whistle. They, along with Steven Gerrard, Lampard, Beckham and the rest, will be taking the most miserable holiday of their lives when the cream of European football gathers next summer. For Beckham, at 32, his 99th appearance for his country is likely to prove his last
